On QOLASIYM: Chapter 2 - Part Four

Posted by Stephen Pidgeon on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at 12:00 AM

Now we arrive at that passage used by the antinomians to teach that the Torah is no longer applicable to the Christian.  I say humbug!  There are numerous teachings by MASHIACH and his talmidiym regarding the keeping of the commandments.  To run behind one misconstrued passage to find shelter for your misgivings will not shelter you at the time of judgment.  Let he who has ears, hear; let he who has eyes, see.

Qolasiym (Colossians) 2:14

Blotting out the handwriting of dogma that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

KJV Colossians 2:14

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

NIV Colossians 2:14

having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.

ESV Colossians 2:14

by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

NASB Colossians 2:14

having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

This requires a review of the Greek, don’t you think?  Here is the Stephanus Textus Receptus:

Col 2:14 εξαλειψας (exaleiphos - eliminating) το (to- the) καθ (κατα´ against) ημων (our) χειρογραφον (cheirographon - manuscript) τοις (per) δογμασιν (dogmasin – dogma) ο (ho – the) ην (ane – was) υπεναντιον (hupenantios (obs.) contrary) ημιν (hemin - us) και (and) αυτο (it) ηρκεν (irken – not defined) αι?´ρω (airo – lifted) εκ (ek – out) του (tou – of) μεσου (mesos - way) προσηλωσας (prose¯loo¯ - nailing) αυτο (it) τω σταυρω (stauros - crucifix)

Shorthand: eliminating that which is against, our manuscript of dogma which was against us and it was lifted out of the way, nailing it to the crucifix.

There is no question that the Greek word δογμασιν (dogmasin – dogma) appears in this passage.  Dogma is commonly used in the English language, and although it could be construed as a debt instrument, it is an unlikely interpretation well down the list.  Dogma means a principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true.  For instance, the Christian dogma of the Trinity.  Its synonyms are: teaching, belief, tenet, principle, precept, maxim, article of faith, or canon.  Nowhere do I see a debt, or debt instrument, yet the NIV, ESV, and the NASB all interpret this as debt.

Furthermore, the Greek term χειρογραφον (cheirographon) means manuscript – yes, even a handwritten manuscript, or handwriting. How does it become a charge of debt, a record of debt, or a certificate of debt?  It is, in its plain meaning, the handwriting (or manuscript) of dogma, which means the handwriting of the tenets, beliefs, principles, precepts, maxims, or articles of a given faith.

Remember now, that virtually all of the practitioners of the faith at that time were what we would call today Messianic Jews, including Sha’ul, Kepha, Ya’aqov, Yahudah and Yahuchanon (we would recognize them as the writers of what is now called the New Testament). This means that they were all called out under the Mishneh – the written oral law which began to be codified at the time of Hillel the Elder, in the first century B.C.  This is the burden about which MASHIACH rebels, calling out the woes to the Parashiym, who have now created modern Judaism under the amended and revised Mishneh

Bear in mind that the context of this passage finds Sha’ul criticizing the philosophy, the vain deceit, the traditions, and the rudiments of men that run contrary to the teaching of MASHIACH.

Qolasiym (Colossians) 2:8-10

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after HAMASHIACH.

The Mishneh was, and has always been, the rudiments and traditions of men, being created by the appointees of Moshe in the 18th chapter of Shemot (Exodus).  This is the context by which we judge the reference.  The handwriting of dogma is the codification of the philosophy, the vain deceit, the traditions of men and the rudiments of the world.  It is not the Torah!

It is not the Torah that is contrary to us, but just the opposite:

Devariym (Deuteronomy) 28:1-14

And it shall come to pass, if you shall hearken diligently unto the voice of YAHUAH ELOHAYKA, to observe and to do את eth-all his commandments which I command you this day, that YAHUAH ELOHAYKA will set you on high above all nations of the earth: 2 And all these blessings shall come on you, and overtake you, if you shall hearken unto the voice of YAHUAH ELOHAYKA. 3 Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. 4 Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, and the fruit of your ground, and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your kine, and the flocks of your sheep. 5 Blessed shall be your basket and your store. 6 Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. 7 YAHUAH shall cause את eth-your enemies that rise up against you to be smitten before your face: they shall come out against you one way, and flee before you seven ways. 8 YAHUAH shall command את eth-the blessing upon you in your storehouses, and in all that you set your hand unto; and he shall bless you in the land which YAHUAH ELOHAYKA gives you. 9 YAHUAH shall establish you a holy people unto himself, as he has sworn unto you, if you shall guard את eth-the commandments of YAHUAH ELOHAYKA, and walk in his ways. 10 And all people of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of YAHUAH; and they shall be afraid of you. 11 And YAHUAH shall make you plenteous in goods, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, in the land which YAHUAH swore unto your fathers to give you. 12 YAHUAH shall open unto you את eth-his good treasure, את eth-the heavens to give the rain unto your land in his season, and to bless את eth all the work of your hand: and you shall lend unto many nations, and you shall not borrow. 13 And YAHUAH shall make you the head, and not the tail; and you shall be above only, and you shall not be beneath; if that you hearken unto the commandments of YAHUAH ELOHAYKA, which I command you this day, to observe and to do them: 14 And you shall not go aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other elohiym to serve them.

Now, I ask you: was YAH lying when these words were written?  If so, give your Eth Cepher away to someone else, for it is meaningless.  If these words are true (and they are), how can this possibly be a dogma which is against us, or contrary to us?  It is not possible.  Yet, a dogma which limits a Sabbath walk, a dogma which restricts cheese from all meats, a dogma which calls on us to put our shoes on in a certain fashion and not in another – these are burdens which add to the Torah, and become an inordinate burden which no man can obtain.  Furthermore it is a burden which does not lead to salvation, nor righteousness.  These are the traditions and reforms of the Parashiym denounced in Mattithyahu 23; these are the philosophies, the vain deceits, the traditions, and the rudiments which Sha’ul directs against, and more importantly, it is this writing of the oral law which is contrary to us and against us and which was nailed to the cross.
