Weekly Torah Portion

It is considered a great joy to study the Torah via the portions that were set out by Ezra to read through the Cepheriym Mosheh (Five Books of Moses), also referred to as the Pentateuch. In addition to the traditional Torah portions, we have also included weekly readings from the Haftorah (Prophets) and the Besorah (Gospels). These portions are also collectively available in our publication titled Parshat; a hardcover perpetual book for annual study. Parshat: Shemoth (Exodus) 21:1 - 24:18

Now these are the judgments which you shall set before them. 2 If you obtain an Ivriy servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. 3 If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his woman shall go out with him. 4 If his adoniy have given him a woman, and she have born him sons or daughters; the woman and her children shall be her adoniy's, and he shall go out by himself. 5 And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my adoniy, my woman, and my children; I will not go out free: 6 Then his adoniy shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his adoniy shall pierce his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him forever.

7 And if a man surrenders his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. 8 If she please not her adoniy, who has betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to surrender her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he has dealt deceitfully with her. 9 And if he has betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters. 10 If he takes him another woman; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish. 11 And if he does not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money.

12 He that smites a man, so that he dies, shall be surely put to death. 13 And if a man lies not in wait, but Elohiym deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint you a place whither he shall flee. 14 But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbor, to slay him with guile; you shall take him from my altar, that he may die.

15 And he that smites his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.

16 And he that steals a man, and sells him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

17 And he that curses his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

18 And if men strive together, and one smite another with a stone, or with his fist, and he dies not, but keeps his bed: 19 If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be innocent: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed.

20 And if a man smites his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. 21 Notwithstanding, if he continues a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.

22 If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's man will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23 And if any mischief follows, then you shall give life for life, 24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

26 And if a man smites the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. 27 And if he smites out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake.

28 If an ox gores a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be innocent. 29 But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it has been testified to his owner, and he has not kept him in, but that he has killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death. 30 If there be laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatsoever is laid upon him. 31 Whether he have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him. 32 If the ox shall push a manservant or a maidservant; he shall give unto their adoniy thirty sheqels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.

33 And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein; 34 The owner of the pit shall make it good and give money unto the owner of them; and the dead beast shall be his.

35 And if the ox of one man hurts the ox of another, that he dies; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money of it; and the dead ox also they shall divide. 36 Or if it be known that the ox has used to push in time past, and his owner has not kept him in; he shall surely pay ox for ox; and the dead shall be his own.

CHAPTER 22

If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.

2 If a thief be found breaking in, and be smitten that he dies, there shall no blood be shed for him. 3 If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. 4 If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.

5 If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.

6 If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of grain, or the standing grain, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.

7 If a man shall deliver unto his neighbor money or stuff to guard, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, let him pay double. 8 If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbor's goods. 9 For all manner of transgression, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another one challenges to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbor. 10 If a man delivers unto his neighbor an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to guard; and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it: 11 Then shall an oath of Yahuah be between them both, that he has not put his hand unto his neighbor's goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good. 12 And if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof. 13 If it be torn in pieces, then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn.

14 And if a man borrows ought of his neighbor, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good. 15 But if the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be a hired thing, it came for his hire.

16 And if a man entices a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his woman. 17 If her father utterly refuses to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.

18 You shall not suffer a witch to live.

19 Whosoever lies with a beast shall surely be put to death.

20 He that sacrifices unto any elohiym, save unto Yahuah only, he shall be utterly destroyed.

21 You shall neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Mitsrayim.

22 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. 23 If you afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; 24 And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your women shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

25 If you lend money to any of my people that is poor by you, you shall not be to him as an usurer, neither shall you lay upon him usury. 26 If you at all take your neighbor's raiment to pledge, you shall deliver it unto him by that the sun goes down: 27 For that is his covering only, it is his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? And it shall come to pass, when he cries unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.

28 You shall not revile the elohiym, nor curse the ruler of your people.

29 You shall not delay to offer the first of your ripe fruits, and of your liquors: the firstborn of your sons shall you give unto me. 30 Likewise shall you do with your oxen, and with your sheep: seven days it shall be with his dam; on the eighth day you shall give it me.

31 And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.

CHAPTER 23

You shall not raise a false report: put not your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

2 You shall not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shall you speak in a cause to decline after many to pervert judgment:

3 Neither shall you countenance a poor man in his cause.

4 If you meet your enemy's ox or his ass going astray, you shall surely bring it back to him again. 5 If you see the ass of him that hates you lying under his burden, and would forbear to help him, you shall surely help with him. 6 You shall not pervert the judgment of your poor in his cause. 7 Keep far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay you not: for I will not justify the wicked.

8 And you shall take no gift: for the gift blinds the wise, and perverts the words of the righteous.

9 Also you shall not oppress a stranger: for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Mitsrayim. 10 And six years you shall sow your land and shall gather in the fruits thereof: 11 But the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie still; that the poor of your people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner you shall deal with your vineyard, and with your olive yard. 12 Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest: that your ox and your ass may rest, and the son of your handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed. 13 And in all things that I have said unto you be guarded: and make no mention of the name of other elohiym, neither let it be heard out of your mouth.

14 Three times you shall keep a feast unto me in the year. 15 You shall guard the Feast of Matstsah: (you shall eat matstsah seven days, as I commanded you, in the time appointed of the month Aviyv; for in it you came out from Mitsrayim: and none shall appear before me empty:) 16 And the Feast of Qatsiyr, the first fruits of your labors, which you have sown in the field: and the Feast of Aciyph, which is in the end of the year, when you have gathered in your labors out of the field. 17 Three times in the year all your males shall appear before Adonai Yahuah. 18 No chamets shall be upon my offering of blood; and no fat of my feast shall remain till morning. 19 The first of the first fruits of your land you shall bring into the house of Yahuah Elohayka. You shall not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.

20 Behold, I send an Angel before you, to guard you in the way, and to bring you into the place which I have prepared. 21 Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him. 22 But if you shall indeed obey his voice and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto your enemies, and an adversary unto your adversaries. 23 For my Angel shall go before you, and bring you in unto the Emoriym, and the Chittiym, and the Perizziym, and the Kena`aniym, and the Chivviym, and the Yevuciym: and I will cut them off. 24 You shall not bow down to their elohiym, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but you shall utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images. 25 And ye shall serve את Yahuah Elohaykem, and he shall bless your bread, and your water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of you.

26 There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in your land: the number of your days I will fulfil. 27 I will send my fear before you and will destroy all the people to whom you shall come, and I will make all your enemies turn their backs unto you. 28 And I will send hornets before you, which shall drive out the Chivviy, the Kena`aniy, and the Chittiy, from before you. 29 I will not drive them out from before you in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against you. 30 By little and little I will drive them out from before you, until you be increased, and inherit the land. 31 And I will set your bounds from the Red Sea even unto the sea of the Pelishtiym, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand את; and you shall drive them out before you. 32 You shall cut no covenant with them, nor with their elohiym. 33 They shall not dwell in your land, lest they make you sin against me: for if you serve their elohiym, it will surely be a snare unto you.

CHAPTER 24

And he said unto Mosheh: Come up unto El-Yahuah, you, and Aharon, Nadav, and Aviyhu, and seventy of the elders of Yashar'el; and worship ye afar off. 2 And Mosheh alone shall come near El-Yahuah: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him.

3 And Mosheh came and told the people את all the words of Yahuah, and את all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice and said: All the words which Yahuah has said will we do. 4 And Mosheh wrote את all the words of Yahuah, and rose up early in the morning, and built an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Yashar'el. 5 And he sent young men of the children of Yashar'el, which offered ascending smoke offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto Yahuah. 6 And Mosheh took half of the blood and put it in basins; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. 7 And he took the cepher of the covenant and read in the audience of the people: and they said: All that Yahuah has said will we do and be obedient. 8 And Mosheh took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said: Behold the blood of the covenant, which Yahuah has cut with you concerning all these words.

9 Then went up Mosheh, and Aharon, Nadav, and Aviyhu, and seventy of the elders of Yashar'el: 10 And they saw את the Elohai of Yashar'el: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a caphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. 11 And upon the nobles of the children of Yashar'el he laid not his hand: also they saw Elohiym and did eat and drink.

12 And Yahuah said unto Mosheh: Come up to me into the Mount and be there: and I will give you caphire stones, and a Torah, and commandments which I have written; that you may teach them. 13 And Mosheh rose up, and his minister Yahusha: and Mosheh went up into the Mount of Elohiym. 14 And he said unto the elders: Tarry ye here for us, until we come again unto you: and behold, Aharon and Choriy are with you: if any man has any matters to do, let him come unto them. 15 And Mosheh went up into the Mount, and a cloud covered the Mount. 16 And the glory of Yahuah abode upon Mount Ciynai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Mosheh out of the midst of the cloud. 17 And the sight of the glory of Yahuah was like devouring fire on the top of the Mount in the eyes of the children of Yashar'el. 18 And Mosheh went into the midst of the cloud and got him up into the Mount: and Mosheh was in the Mount forty days and forty nights.

Haftorah: Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 33:25-26; 34:8-22

25 Thus says Yahuah; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; 26 Then will I cast away the seed of Ya`aqov, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Avraham, Yitschaq, and Ya`aqov: for I will cause their captivity to return and have mercy on them.

Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 34:8-22

8 This is the Word that came unto El-Yirmeyahu from Yahuah, after that the king Tsidqiyahu had cut a covenant with all the people which were at Yerushalayim, to proclaim liberty unto them; 9 That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being an Ivriy or an Ivriyah, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Yahudiy his brother. 10 Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that everyone should let his manservant, and everyone his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them anymore, then they obeyed, and let them go. 11 But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.

12 Therefore the Word of Yahuah came to El-Yirmeyahu from Yahuah, saying: 13 Thus says Yahuah, the Elohai of Yashar’el; I cut a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Mitsrayim, out of the house of bondmen, saying: 14 At the end of seven years let ye go every man his brother an Ivriy, which has been sold unto you; and when he has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear. 15 And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbor; and ye had cut a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name: 16 But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids. 17 Therefore thus says Yahuah; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, everyone to his brother, and every man to his neighbor: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, says Yahuah, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. 18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had cut before me, when they cut the calf in two, and passed between the parts thereof, 19 The princes of Yahudah, and the princes of Yerushalayim, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts of the calf; 20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heavens, and to the beasts of the earth. 21 And Tsidqiyahu king of Yahudah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babel's army, which are gone up from you. 22 Behold, I will command, says Yahuah, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Yahudah a desolation without an inhabitant.

Besorah: Mattithyahu (Matthew) 7:1 - 8:3

Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 3 And why behold you the mote that is in your brother's eye, but consider not the beam that is in your own eye? 4 Or how will you say to your brother: Let me pull out the mote out of your eye; and behold, a beam is in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of your own eye; and then shall you see clearly to cast out the mote out of your brother's eye. 6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For everyone that asks receives; and he that seeks finds; and to him that knocks it shall be opened. 9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?

12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the Torah and the prophets. 13 Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because narrow is the gate, and troublesome is the way, which leads to life, and few there be that find it.

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree brings forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree brings forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that brings not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

21 Not everyone that says unto me, Adonai, Adonai, shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Adonai, Adonai, have we not prophesied in your name? And in your name have cast out devils? And in your name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye workers of iniquity. 24 Therefore whosoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. 26 And everyone that hears these sayings of mine, and does them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. 28 And it came to pass, when Yahusha had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: 29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

CHAPTER 8

When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. 2 And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying: Adonai, if you will, you can make me clean. 3 And Yahusha put forth his hand, and touched him, saying: I will; be clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
