28 Asar Ashtay (Shvat) - 5 Asar Shenayim (Adar)

PARASHAT: Shemot 21:1 - 24:18

NOW these are the judgments which you shall set before them. 2 If you obtain an Ivriy servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. 3 If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his woman shall go out with him. 4 If his master have given him a woman, and she have born him sons or daughters; the woman and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself. 5 And if the servant shall plainly say, I love את eth-my master, את eth-my woman, and את eth-my children; I will not go out free: 6 Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall pierce את eth-his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him forever.

7 And if a man surrenders את eth-his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. 8 If she please not her master, who has betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to surrender her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he has dealt deceitfully with her. 9 And if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters. 10 If he take him another woman; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish. 11 And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money.

12 He that smites a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death. 13 And if a man lie not in wait, but ELOHIYM deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint you a place whither he shall flee. 14 But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; you shall take him from my altar, that he may die.

15 And he that smites his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.

16 And he that steals a man, and sells him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.

17 And he that curses his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.

18 And if men strive together, and one smite את eth-another with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keeps his bed: 19 If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be innocent: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed.

20 And if a man smite את eth-his servant, or את eth-his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. 21 Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.

22 If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's man will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23 And if any mischief follow, then you shall give life for life, 24 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

26 And if a man smite את eth-the eye of his servant, or את eth-the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. 27 And if he smite out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake.

28 If an ox gore את eth-a man or את eth-a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be innocent. 29 But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it has been testified to his owner, and he has not kept him in, but that he has killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death. 30 If there be laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatsoever is laid upon him. 31 Whether he have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him. 32 If the ox shall push a manservant or a maidservant; he shall give unto their master thirty sheqels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned.

33 And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein; 34 The owner of the pit shall make it good, and give money unto the owner of them; and the dead beast shall be his.

35 And if את eth-the ox of one man hurts את eth-the ox of another, that he die; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide את eth-the money of it; and את eth-the dead ox also they shall divide. 36 Or if it be known that the ox has used to push in time past, and his owner has not kept him in; he shall surely pay ox for ox; and the dead shall be his own.

CHAPTER 22

IF a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.

2 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him. 3 If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. 4 If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double.

5 If a man shall cause a field or vineyard את eth-to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution.

6 If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of grain, or the standing grain, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled את eth-the fire shall surely make restitution.

7 If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to guard, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, let him pay double. 8 If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour's goods. 9 For all manner of transgression, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challenges to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour. 10 If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to guard; and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it: 11 Then shall an oath of YAHUAH be between them both, that he has not put his hand unto his neighbour's goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good. 12 And if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof. 13 If it be torn in pieces, then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn.

14 And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good. 15 But if the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be a hired thing, it came for his hire.

16 And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his woman. 17 If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.

18 You shall not suffer a witch to live.

19 Whosoever lies with a beast shall surely be put to death.

20 He that sacrifices unto any elohiym, save unto YAHUAH only, he shall be utterly destroyed.

21 You shall neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Mitsrayim.

22 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. 23 If you afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; 24 And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your women shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

25 If you lend money to את eth-any of my people את eth-that is poor by you, you shall not be to him as an usurer, neither shall you lay upon him usury. 26 If you at all take your neighbour's raiment to pledge, you shall deliver it unto him by that the sun goes down: 27 For that is his covering only, it is his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he cries unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.

28 You shall not revile the elohiym, nor curse the ruler of your people.

29 You shall not delay to offer the first of your ripe fruits, and of your liquors: the firstborn of your sons shall you give unto me. 30 Likewise shall you do with your oxen, and with your sheep: seven days it shall be with his dam; on the eighth day you shall give it me.

31 And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs.

CHAPTER 23

YOU shall not raise a false report: put not your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

2 You shall not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shall you speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment:

3 Neither shall you countenance a poor man in his cause.

4 If you meet your enemy's ox or his ass going astray, you shall surely bring it back to him again. 5 If you see the ass of him that hates you lying under his burden, and would forbear to help him, you shall surely help with him. 6 You shall not wrest the judgment of your poor in his cause. 7 Keep far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay you not: for I will not justify the wicked.

8 And you shall take no gift: for the gift blinds the wise, and perverts the words of the righteous.

9 Also you shall not oppress a stranger: for ye know את eth-the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangers in the land of Mitsrayim. 10 And six years you shall sow את eth-your land, and shall gather in את eth-the fruits thereof: 11 But the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie still; that the poor of your people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner you shall deal with your vineyard, and with your oliveyard. 12 Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest: that your ox and your ass may rest, and the son of your handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed. 13 And in all things that I have said unto you be guarded: and make no mention of the name of other elohiym, neither let it be heard out of your mouth.

14 Three times you shall keep a feast unto me in the year. 15 You shall guard את eth-the Feast of Matstsah: (you shall eat matstsah seven days, as I commanded you, in the time appointed of the month Aviyv; for in it you came out from Mitsrayim: and none shall appear before me empty:) 16 And the Feast of Shavu’ot,[i] the firstfruits of your labours, which you have sown in the field: and the Feast of Cukkot,[ii] which is in the end of the year, when you have gathered in את eth-your labours out of the field. 17 Three times in the year all your males shall appear before ADONAI YAHUAH. 18 You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with chamets; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning. 19 The first of the firstfruits of your land you shall bring into the house of YAHUAH ELOHAYKA. You shall not seethe a kid in his mother's milk.

20 Behold, I send an Angel before you, to guard you in the way, and to bring you into the place which I have prepared. 21 Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him. 22 But if you shall indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be את eth-an enemy unto your enemies, and את eth-an adversary unto your adversaries. 23 For my Angel shall go before you, and bring you in unto the Emoriym, and the Chittiym, and the Perizziym, and the Kena`aniym, and the Chivviym, and the Yevuciym: and I will cut them off. 24 You shall not bow down to their elohiym, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but you shall utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images. 25 And ye shall serve את eth YAHUAH ELOHAYKEM, and he shall bless את eth-your bread, and את eth-your water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of you.

26 There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in your land: את eth-the number of your days I will fulfil. 27 I will send את eth-my fear before you, and will destroy את eth-all the people to whom you shall come, and I will make את eth-all your enemies turn their backs unto you. 28 And I will send את eth-hornets before you, which shall drive out את eth-the Chivviy, את eth-the Kena`aniy, and את eth-the Chittiy, from before you. 29 I will not drive them out from before you in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against you. 30 By little and little I will drive them out from before you, until you be increased, and inherit את eth-the land. 31 And I will set את eth-your bounds from the Red Sea even unto the sea of the Pelishtiym, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand את eth; and you shall drive them out before you. 32 You shall make no covenant with them, nor with their elohiym. 33 They shall not dwell in your land, lest they make you sin against me: for if you serve את eth-their elohiym, it will surely be a snare unto you.

CHAPTER 24

AND he said unto Mosheh, Come up unto EL-YAHUAH, you, and Aharon, Nadav, and Aviyhu, and seventy of the elders of Yisra’el; and worship ye afar off. 2 And Mosheh alone shall come near EL-YAHUAH: but they shall not come nigh; neither shall the people go up with him.

3 And Mosheh came and told the people את eth all the words of YAHUAH, and את eth all the judgments: and all the people answered with one voice, and said, All the words which YAHUAH has said will we do. 4 And Mosheh wrote את eth all the words of YAHUAH, and rose up early in the morning, and built an altar under the hill, and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Yisra’el. 5 And he sent את eth-young men of the children of Yisra’el, which offered burnt offerings, and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen unto YAHUAH. 6 And Mosheh took half of the blood, and put it in basons; and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. 7 And he took the cepher of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that YAHUAH has said will we do, and be obedient. 8 And Mosheh took את eth-the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which YAHUAH has made with you concerning all these words.

9 Then went up Mosheh, and Aharon, Nadav, and Aviyhu, and seventy of the elders of Yisra’el: 10 And they saw את eth the ELOHIYM of Yisra’el: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. 11 And upon the nobles of the children of Yisra’el he laid not his hand: also they saw את eth-ELOHIYM, and did eat and drink.

12 And YAHUAH said unto Mosheh, Come up to me into the Mount, and be there: and I will give you את eth-sapphire stones, and a Torah, and commandments which I have written; that you may teach them. 13 And Mosheh rose up, and his minister Yahusha: and Mosheh went up into the Mount of ELOHIYM. 14 And he said unto the elders, Tarry ye here for us, until we come again unto you: and, behold, Aharon and Choriy are with you: if any man have any matters to do, let him come unto them. 15 And Mosheh went up into the Mount, and a cloud covered את eth-the Mount. 16 And the glory of YAHUAH abode upon Mount Ciynai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Mosheh out of the midst of the cloud. 17 And the sight of the glory of YAHUAH was like devouring fire on the top of the Mount in the eyes of the children of Yisra’el. 18 And Mosheh went into the midst of the cloud, and got him up into the Mount: and Mosheh was in the Mount forty days and forty nights.

HAFTARAH: Yirmeyahu 34:8-22; 33:25-26

This is the Word that came unto El-Yirmeyahu from YAHUAH, after that the king Tsidqiyahu had made a covenant with את eth-all the people which were at Yerushalayim, to proclaim liberty unto them; 9 That every man should let את eth-his manservant, and every man את eth-his maidservant, being an Ivriy or an Ivriyah,[iii] go free; that none should serve himself of them, to wit, of a Yahudiy his brother. 10 Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that everyone should let את eth-his manservant, and everyone את eth-his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them anymore, then they obeyed, and let them go. 11 But afterward they turned, and caused את eth-the servants and את eth-the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.

12 Therefore the Word of YAHUAH came to El-Yirmeyahu from YAHUAH, saying, 13 Thus says YAHUAH, the ELOHIYM of Yisra’el; I made a covenant with את eth-your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Mitsrayim, out of the house of bondmen, saying, 14 At the end of seven years let ye go every man את eth-his brother an Ivriy, which has been sold unto you; and when he has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined את eth-their ear. 15 And ye were now turned, and had את eth-done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name: 16 But ye turned and polluted את eth-my name, and caused every man את eth-his servant, and every man את eth-his handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids. 17 Therefore thus says YAHUAH; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, everyone to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, says YAHUAH, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. 18 And I will give את eth-the men that have transgressed את eth-my covenant, which have not performed את eth-the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof, 19 The princes of Yahudah, and the princes of Yerushalayim, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between the parts of the calf; 20 I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heavens, and to the beasts of the earth. 21 And את eth-Tsidqiyahu king of Yahudah and את eth-his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babel's army, which are gone up from you. 22 Behold, I will command, says YAHUAH, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make את eth-the cities of Yahudah a desolation without an inhabitant.

Thus says YAHUAH; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; 26 Then will I cast away the seed of Ya`aqov, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Avraham, Yitschaq, and Ya`aqov: for I will cause את eth-their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

BESORAH: Lucas 7:1 - 8:3

NOW when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Kapharnachum. 2 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. 3 And when he heard of YAHUSHA, he sent unto him the elders of the Yahudiym, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. 4 And when they came to YAHUSHA, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: 5 For he loves our nation, and he has built us a synagogue. 6 Then YAHUSHA went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, ADONAI, trouble not yourself: for I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof: 7 Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto you: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. 8 For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it. 9 When YAHUSHA heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Yisra’el. 10 And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.

11 And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Naviyth;[iv] and many of his Talmidiym went with him, and much people. 12 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. 13 And when ADONAI saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. 14 And he came and touched the coffin:[v] and they that bore him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto you, Arise. 15 And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. 16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified YAH, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That YAHUAH has visited his people. 17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Yahudah, and throughout all the region round about. 18 And the Talmidiym of Yahuchanon showed him of all these things.

19 And Yahuchanon calling unto him two of his Talmidiym sent them to YAHUSHA, saying, Are you he that should come? or look we for another? 20 When the men were come unto him, they said, Yahuchanon the Immerser has sent us unto you, saying, Are you he that should come? or look we for another? 21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil ruachot; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. 22 Then YAHUSHA answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell Yahuchanon what things ye have seen and heard; את eth how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the Besorah is preached. 23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

24 And when the messengers of Yahuchanon were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning Yahuchanon, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind? 25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. 26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. 27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before your face, which shall prepare your way before you. 28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than Yahuchanon the Immerser: but he that is least in the Kingdom of YAHUAH is greater than he. 29 And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, YAHUAH justified, being immersed with the immersion of Yahuchanon. 30 But the Parashiym and lawyers rejected the counsel of YAHUAH against themselves, being not immersed of him.

31 And ADONAI said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like? 32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. 33 For Yahuchanon the Immerser came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He has a devil. 34 The Son of Adam is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! 35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.

36 And one of the Parashiym desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Parashiy's house, and sat down to meat. 37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that YAHUSHA sat at meat in the Parashiy's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, 38 And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. 39 Now when the Parashiy which had bidden him saw it, he spoke within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that touches him: for she is a sinner. 40 And YAHUSHA answering said unto him, Shim`on, I have somewhat to say unto you. And he said, Master, say on. 41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. 42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? 43 Shim`on answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, You have rightly judged. 44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Shim`on, See this woman? I entered into your house, you gave me no water for my feet: but she has washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. 45 You gave me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in has not ceased to kiss my feet. 46 My head with oil you did not anoint: but this woman has anointed my feet with ointment. 47 Wherefore I say unto you, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little. 48 And he said unto her, Your sins are forgiven. 49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgives sins also? 50 And he said to the woman, Your faith has saved you; go in peace.

CHAPTER 8

AND it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and showing the good news of את eth-the Kingdom of YAHUAH: and the twelve were with him, 2 And certain women, which had been healed of evil ruachot and infirmities, Miryam called of Migdal, out of whom went seven devils, 3 And Yochanah the woman of Chuza Herod's steward, and Shushanah, and many others
